Continuous                   The Great Sunflower Project
We have just launched “The Great Sunflower Project, a community science project with the goal of increasing our understanding of where bees are doing poorly and how the pollination of our garden and wild plants are being affected. We’re hoping you will join us by planting sunflowers in your garden. Community, demonstration, and school gardens are invited to participate.

We will send you some free native sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed and twiche a month, we’d like you to time how long it takes for 5 bees to visit one flower on that sunflower. This information will give us an index of pollination that we can compare across the United States. Once we know where bees are in trouble, we can start developing a plan to help them.

You can see the details about the project and register at www. greatsunflower.org or contact us at sfbee@sfsu.edu.

Do join us! Thank you!

May 17          The 8th ANNUAL " BUILD A POND DAY ".
The West TN Chapter of the North American Water Gardening Society
( N.A.W.G.S ) will host the 8th annual “Build A Pond Day” on
Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 9:00 am till 2:00 pm.
This Educational event is FREE to the public and will give those interested a great opportunity to learn from Professional Waterfeature Designer/Installer Mark Carter and his crew from Carter's Nursery, Pond & Patio.

"USA Today rates water features as the #1 enhancement home owners are choosing” explains Mark Carter (landscape designer and V.P. of Carter’s Nursery, Pond & Patio, Inc). “This is the biggest trend in landscaping across the country and the need for accurate information on water gardening is huge. Hopefully by doing work-shops like this, we can help educate the public and offer valuable insight and information". Mark also adds "Because of the drought conditions we've experienced over the last few years and a scarcity of resources as of late, we've developed a system that can collect rainwater in an underground cistern to replace the evaporation and splash-out in the water feature, unlike other cisterns, this one is part of an ecosystem, the water is re circulated, so you don't get a smell or stagnant water. You can oversize them, and they can be used to water the lawn and garden, so you don't squander precious resources,” said Carter.

They resemble normal ponds and a variety of other waterfall features but they are deeper in spots and have several collection points for rainwater. Called a RainBank, they can be built in all sizes and prices, and even a small one normally doesn't need to be topped off with a garden hose.

" Hopefully, people who attend the workshop will leave with some great ideas. "Everyone I have talked to about this is very excited and looking forward to this learning experience.”

When you register for the workshop you will receive the address and directions to the pond-build site. We will be constructing a pondless waterfall this year. A pondless waterfall will fit into most any design and is great for anyone who wants the soothing sound of flowing water in a Low Maintenance application and with the added interest of the rainwater harvesting system everyone will come away with some good solid information.

This is a perfect opportunity for gardeners and all you ‘Do-It-Yourself’ folks. You may participate if you like ( wear appropriate clothing and boots – please no flip-flops or sandals) or you can just enjoy watching and learning from the sidelines (bring a folding chair). Call (731) 424-2206 or come by Carter's Nursery, Pond & Patio to register; this design/build workshop is FREE to the public and will fill quickly so call to reserve your spot now.

June 18 - 21        Southern Region Master Gardener Conference, Oklahoma City

 Dear Master Gardener,

The Southern Region Master Gardener Conference is not far away. Realizing that many budgets are probably very tight right now, we have decided to extend the early registration deadline to May 23. We would like everyone who has a desire to attend to be able to do so and feel that extending the deadline will allow some flexibility in budgeting and planning for the conference.

Consider joining us for this grand event! We have some first class garden tours scheduled, many fantastic topics and speakers, a trade show, a Trivial Bowl Game (to quiz your knowledge), and a wonderful evening full of more garden viewing, a stroll through the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, excellent food and captivating entertainment. If you feel so inclined to don the cowboy apparel that evening, please feel free to do so. There are also many exciting things going on in the Oklahoma City area and on Thursday night you will have the opportunity to choose from river boat rides, eating at some excellent restaurants, strolling through the Downtown Bricktown area, including a visit to the Myriad Botanical Garden and Crystal Bridge and much more!

Attached is a flier with more information about the conference. Please take a look at it and share with a friend.

We look forward to seeing you all there as we host this grand event!
