You Can Grow a Garden This Year!
Rutherford County Master Gardeners, in collaboration with Linebaugh Public Library, is offering two basic gardening courses in 2018. Together these will give you everything you need for success.
Classes are free but REGISTRATION Is REQUIRED Call the library at 615 893-4131 or stop by the circulation desk to register |
The first course will prepare you to start planting as soon as the danger of frost has passed. During the month of March, we will meet on Saturday mornings at 10 AM. The classes will last about one hour and will be taught by Master Gardeners.

Getting Started Gardening: Soil Prep and Site Selection
March 3 Perhaps the single most important component of a successful garden is healthy soil. Garden plants simply will not thrive in poor soil. In this class you will learn simple and inexpensive ways to improve soil quality. We will cover site selection, soil tests, adding organic matter, raised beds and improving soil fertility. Container Gardening and Herbs
March 24 Containers are an alternative to in-ground planting. If you have limited sun, poor soil or a small yard, containers might be for you. We will show you what does well in a pot and how to prepare and plant it. Herbs are fun to grow. The second series will focus on specific aspects of gardening. Most of these topics are very involved. We will introduce you to them and provide references for further study. Questions are encouraged. Like the other, this series is introductory and intended for new gardeners and those seeking more information. All classes are taught by Master Gardeners. This series will meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7 PM. The class will last about one hour.
Plant Varieties: Natives, Heirlooms, Hybrids

This session will explore the differences between plant varieties and cultivars. Varieties will be defined and we will explore their strengths and weaknesses. Seed saving techniques and propagation of cultivars will be covered as well as attention to seed saving practices and organizations.

May 3 What is a weed? Are they all “bad”? What is wrong with weeds? This class will teach you about the life cycle of weeds so you can understand how to control them.
